Start with the job you want an app to do. Counting days, guiding a response in the moment, and keeping a photo journal are different needs. An app that looks impressive in screenshots may not match the moment you need help with.

Disclosure: this guide is published by NailPause’s developer. It is a feature-selection checklist, not an independent ranking or a clinical comparison of competing apps.

Start with your main use case

  • I notice the urge and need an action: look for a reset that is quick to open and clear to follow.
  • I do it automatically: look for a practical way to record the setting and notice recurring patterns.
  • I want a visual record: check how photos are stored, deleted, and backed up.
  • I want structure: read what the plan actually asks you to do each day.

Check the difficult-day experience

Imagine opening the app after biting again. Does its language help you take the next step? Can you record a lapse without losing access to the parts you need? A punishment-based design may not be an experience you want to return to.

Screenshots do not answer everything. If a free demonstration is available, try the core action before deciding whether the larger experience suits you.

Look closely at privacy

Read the developer’s policy rather than assuming ‘private’ means only on-device storage. Check whether an account is required, whether photos are uploaded, and what happens when you erase your data.

NailPause requires no account and stores recovery photos locally. Purchase handling uses Apple and RevenueCat, as explained in our privacy policy. Local storage also means erased data cannot be recovered by us.

Understand the purchase before starting

Free to download does not mean every feature is free. Review the current App Store listing, any trial terms, and the purchase confirmation screen. Do not rely on an old comparison article for a current price.

NailPause has optional in-app purchases. Its listing and in-app purchase screen are the right places to verify the offer available to you.

Keep expectations realistic

A polished interface or a reference to habit reversal is not proof that an app itself was clinically tested. Ask what evidence supports the specific claim being made.

Try the free NailPause web reset if in-the-moment practice is your priority. If you need assessment or treatment for injury or significant distress, an app comparison is not a substitute for qualified care.
